Find us quickly at: http://notes.lncd.org/p/index

If anyone wants to join us, we would like to suggest working on a service that identifies identifiers... this will involve some search index use, a bit of python programming, and working as a team to get something up and running.

(If nobody is interested in this, we will instead generally help out with other teams.)

The aim - to have a service we can query that will tell us a DOI is a DOI, and what we can do with it.

Longer term - this is based on an idea I had a few weeks ago with some other people at a meeting. We are going to finish building this and then get the service up and running, perhaps with UKOLN, so that it is available for everyone else to use, and it can be populated with more useful identifying capabilities.

END RESULT: Service built. Really nice GUI, main functions working. No social functionality yet, but people can submit their own algorithms for matching identifiers to the service and the identification works - it is quite flexible and extensible in our opinion, being based on a NoSQL database and Python. 75% of originally intended features built. Extra: twitter API integrated. However, no time to actually get our App registered on twitter and responding to requests (est. time 30-60 minutes).

1. Team Members & Tasks

Deepak and Praveen: Research team - Search for data related to UK universities, rankings and employability. Also think of the web interface design features.

Rishi: Team leader - Validate the data found by assessing reliability & usability. Then prep columns so it can be added to the MySQL database. Organise the layout of the website to present information in clearest form using drop downs and graphs

Melvin and Firtina : Programmers - Implement the data into the DB, develop the website using PHP & some elements of Java to display

2. Aim:

Project aim was to use the data publically made available by Guardian and HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency), to give prospective students a clearer understanding.

3. Final outcome

We chose to use data from the 2009/2010 academic year as this is recent enough to still be relevant but also it meant there was data available in the different areas.

Some of the data relates to the university and some only relates to the courses’ subject area so we mashed up there data where possible.

Information on the website includes:

· University ranking · Tuition fees · Make up of students (Full time/Part time & UK/Other EU/Non Eu) · Guardian scoring around student satisfaction & teaching etc · Employment rates upon graduation

We hope that the way we have designed the layout and presentation will make it easier for a student to get a feel and understanding of the course and university.

Working as part of Team Index the shit out of it too (group project of Cottage Labs). Furthermore, entering on my own in the http://2011.devxs.org/wiki/Competitions#Cottage_Labs . The competition is solving *any* one of the open issues in the bug tracker for the following project: https://github.com/okfn/bibserver/issues/

Issue resolved completely! Cottage Labs checked and hopefully happy with it, they'll say as judges I suppose!
